Blue Devils Avenge Last Season's Loss to Maine South in Come from Behind Fashion
Updated: Sep 12, 2022
Last season the Hawks and Blue Devils met in Gurnee. The Hawks won in a defensive struggle 10-2. A year later they would meet again; this time in Park Ridge.
It was scoreless at the end of the first half, and Hawks' senior quarterback Ryan Leyden left the game in the second quarter with a dislocated left shoulder. Junior Jack Defilippis took over for Leyden. Defilippis would finish 9/17, 94 yards, 2 TD, Int, and 12 carries for 50 yards.
It was 3-0 Maine South after three quarters. Defilippis' first touchdown came early in the 4th quarter on a catch and run by Michael Dellumo (8 carries, 41 yards, 3 receptions 36 yards, TD) for a 13 yard score.
Blue Devils' senior running back Charley Thompson was not having it. Thompson ripped an 80 yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage after the Maine South score, making it 10-6 after the extra point attempt was blocked. Thompson would finish with 115 yards on the ground on 17 carries and the one touchdown.
Then the spotlight turned to Jailen Duffie. The senior defensive back picked off Jack Defilippis on Maine South's next possession. He would then catch a 28 yard bomb in the back of the endzone from Arizona State Baseball commit Adam Behrens (10/22, 115 yards, TD), putting the Blue Devils up 13-10.
Justin Kretz would add a 2 yard run at the 2:56 mark to make it 19-10 Warren. Then the Hawks would march down the field to make it 19-17 on a 10 yard touchdown pass from Jack Defilippis to Sean Mullen with 31.3 seconds left. The Blue Devils recovered an onside kick to seal the game.
The Blue Devils (2-0) will open up conference play next Friday night at Libertyville (2-0). The Hawks (1-1) will travel to Barrington (0-2) for the first of two Central Suburban-Mid Suburban crossovers.
