The third and final DuKane-CPL matchup at Gately Stadium Saturday night was between Batavia and Phillips. The Bulldogs came out early on and showed why they are one of the best programs in the state.
The first drive lasted over seven minutes. Tyler Jansey, normally one of the Bulldogs two star linebackers, capped off the drive with an 11 yard touchdown run. In the second quarter running back Ryan Whitwell (13 carries, 69 yards, TD, 2 receptions, 25 yards) ran the ball in from 2 yards out moments after an interception by Drake Ostrander. The Bulldogs would then end the first half on a 7 yard touchdown reception by Drew Gerke from Ryan Boe (10/17, 114 yards, TD).
The second half didn't get any better for the Wildcats as the opening kickoff was fumbled and returned for a touchdown by the Bulldogs' Kyle Porter. Porter would also add an interception on defense. The Bulldogs forced four turnovers on defense and special teams combined. Then the Bulldogs eventually got touchdown runs by Charlie Whelpley (34 yards) and Ryan Boe (1 yard) to force a running clock.
Despite the tough loss, do not count the Wildcats out. A couple of things to remember: first, the program has two state titles (Class 4A in 2015, and Class 5A in 2017). Second, this is a team with a lot of speed. Third, they're opening schedule alone will make them better.
The Wildcats (0-1) will host Mount Carmel (1-0) next Friday night, and the Bulldogs (1-0) will travel to Lincoln-Way East (1-0).
