Thursday was the day for the 1A and 2A games for a chance to advance to the State Championships on Saturday. The second 1A semifinal was between Tuscola and Scales Mound.
In The Supersectionals Scales Mound defeated, who many presumed as the 1A favorite, Marshall (Chicago) 60-56. Tuscola beat up Mounds Meridian 74-53.
Last season, the Hornets lost 75-41 to Liberty in the State Semifinals before taking 3rd place in 1A. The Warriors lost in dramatic fashion in the Sectional Final to Macon Meridian 82-79.
Both teams struggled to hit their shots in this one, especially in the first half when each team finished under 20% from the field. Scales Mound's shooting would improve in the second half.
The Warriors lead 15-13 at halftime, but the hungry Hornets were able to get going offensively in the second half. The second half push, led by the tough 6-2 junior guard Thomas Hereau, led the Hornets to outscore the Warriors 27-12 in the second half and a 49-27 victory.
Hereau led with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets, as he was the only player on the floor for either side to finish with double digit scoring. He also made 5/6 free throws. Senior guard Jacob Duerr had 8 points and 5 rebounds, and Dylan Slavenburg had 7 points and 7 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Max Sweetnam led the Warriors with 8 points and was 2/5 from three. Both threes kept the Warriors in the game in the fourth quarter. 6-3 junior forward Jordan Quinn had 7 points and 11 rebounds.
Scales Mound (33-5) will ay in the 1A Championship game against Gibault Catholic (31-7).
