Mangruem, Wildcats Roll Past Vikings; Await East St. Louis in 2nd Round
A pair of Big Twelve Conference foes dueled it out Saturday afternoon in Normal.
Despite being in the same conference, Danville and Normal West did not play each other during the season. There are eleven teams in the conference (including Urbana who didn't have a varsity season). Typically, each team has eight scheduled conference games and one non-conference game.
The Wildcats continued their dominance in the conference, and shutout the Vikings 21-0. Quarterback Jayden Mangruem lead the way as he was 17/29 for 187 yards with one touchdown pass and 2 interceptions. He also had 72 yards on the ground on 13 carries and a 3 yard keeper after connecting with Gavin Camp (5 receptions, 71 yards) for 38 yards on a 3rd and 22.
The Wildcats' secret weapon was Brock Leenerman. While Leenerman's numbers don't jump out at you (10 carries, 29 yards, TD, rec, 23 yards, TD) he got things started early in the second quarter scoring the first touchdown of the game. Leenerman caught Mangruem's only touchdown pass, a 23 yard catch and run out of the backfield.
The Vikings finish the season at 6-4, and Normal West (9-1) will host powerhouse East St. Louis (8-2) mext weekend.
