Whenever Hersey and Prospect meet in conference play, you can usually expect there to be a ton of fireworks throughout. Last season the Huskies and Knights combined for 75 points, which saw Hersey win 41-34 in overtime.
There were early fireworks coming from the Huskies. Two early touchdowns from running back Nasir McKenzie (15 yard run) and tight end Logan Farrell (4 yard reception) helped lift the Huskies to a 28-3 win over the Knights. The Mckenzie touchdown was set up by a 39 yard pass from Colton Gumino to receiver Carson Grove.
Grove, a Northwestern commit, scored the final two touchdowns of the game: a 5 yard run on a keeper out of the wildcat late in the first half, and a 45 yard reception in the 4th quarter to put the game away after a scoreless 3rd quarter. Grove finished the night with 9 receptions for 165 yards, and had an interception on defense.
Nasir McKenzie toyed with the Knights defense all night rushing for 212 yards. It was his second consecutive 200-yard game after he ran for 226 yards against Buffalo Grove. Junior quarterback Colton Gumino was 18 for 25 passing for 245 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception.
The Knights had their opportunities to get themselves back in the game, but were only able to get a field goal early in the 2nd quarter. The Huskies defense bent, but didn't break as they forced 2 turnovers and sacked Knights quarterback Jack Skoog 3 times.
Skoog threw for 228 yards on 23 of 37 passing and an interception. Receiver Nathan Cichy caught 7 passes for 69 yards, and Nathan Tader caught 6 passes for 65 yards. Junior running back Noah Easter had 23 carries for 74 yards, and had 4 receptions for 25 yards.
In week 7, Hersey (6-0, 2-0 MSL East) will travel to Rolling Meadows (2-4, 1-1 MSL East), and Prospect (4-2, 1-1 MSL East) will host Elk Grove (2-4, 1-1 MSL East).
