Nevan Bufka's Two 4th Quarter Picks Help Lead Lemont to Conference Title and Playoff Berth

matt now

Thursday night I made the long trip to Calumet City for a South Suburban Blue showdown. Not only was the conference title on the line, but Lemont was looking to keep their playoff streak alive.

Lemont got off to a fast start when running back Daniel Taylor found paydirt from 50 yards out first play of the game. However Lemont's offense was held in check throughout the majority of the game.

The Meteors led 12-6 at the half after a 14 yard reception from Aric Moultrie, and a 5 yard run by Terrion Long in the 2nd quarter. It stayed 12-6 up until the final few minutes.

Enter Nevan Bufka.

Bufka, a junior safety, picked off two Dominic Gradford passes within two minutes. Bufka returned the first interception to the Meteor 15, and running back Vic Piskule scored from 1 yard out two plays later to tie the game at 12.

Lemont took the lead with less than two minutes left off Bufka's second interception when quarterback Chris Montell hit Jason Piskule up the middle for 33 yards. Terrion Long took the ensuing kickoff off a bounce and ran it back for an 85 yard touchdown, but the Meteors 2-point conversion failed after a delay of game penalty and Lemont clinched a playoff spot and the South Suburban Blue with the 19-18 win.

Chris Montell went 7/12 for 121 yards. Daniel Taylor had 14 carries for 113 yards. Vic Piskule had 12 carries for 108 yards. Julius Dian had 10 carries for 42 yards. Jason Piskule caught 2 passes for 40 yards.

Dominic Gradford went 7/16 for 91 yards, 1 touchdown, 3 interceptions, and an 83 yard blocked field goal return. Terrion Long had 8 carries for 43 yards, and 2 catches for 36 yards. Tristan Jackson had 14 carries for 35 yards.

Lemont finishes the regular season 5-4 and 5-1 in the South Suburban Blue, and the Meteors finish 7-2 and 4-2 in the South Suburban Blue.
