Every year in February, Evergreen Park hosts one of the most underrated shootouts in the Chicago area, if not the entire state of Illinois. Now named the "Mustangs Sunday Showcase," this shootout consists primarily showcases south suburban teams.
Last season was my first time to this shootout, and it didn't disappoint. I saw some great finishes, including an 80-73 overtime win by the host Mustangs over Marist. There was more of the same Sunday.

Lake Forest Academy 75 Payson-Seymour 70 (OT): Caxys Get Quick Boost By Rashad Smith in Overtime
A back-and-forth ballgame throughout. The Caxys had well-balanced scoring with four guys in triple digits. Simon Weissermann led the Caxys with 22 points. Philip Kavu had 19 points, Rashad Smith had 13 points, and Rron Radoniqi had 12 points. Smith drained a quick three to start the overtime. Brian Dieker led the Indians with 37 points, and was 6/9 from three. Lane Barker had 15 points (5/6 3-pt.), and Blake Schwartz had 11 points.
Homewood-Flossmoor 82 Francis Parker 47: The Vikings Roll in the Second Half Led By Vincent Davis and Dominic Pangallo
We had a very competitive tight first half, but the Vikings were too much for the Colonels, as they were outscored 49-17 in the second half. Vincent Davis led the Vikings with 16 points. Dominic Pangallo had 12 points off the bench, and Jahlil Birchette had 11 points (3/7 3-pt.). Payton Pitts impressed for the Colonels scoring 27 of the 47 points.
De La Salle 54 Oak Lawn 52: Corey Lee's 25 Points Not Enough for Spartans to Overcome Tough Start
The Spartans got off to a slow start in this one, but junior guard Corey Lee nearly guided them to a comeback. The Meteors had the ball with under a minute left and the game tied at 51 before freshman guard Morgan Travis drained a three to put the Meteors ahead. The Spartans had two opportunities to take the lead at the free throw line, but missed 3 of the final 4 free throws. Travis, along with 6-7 junior Alioune Mbaye, each had 8 points, and Simeon transfer Richard Lindsey led the Meteors with 15 points. Corey Lee led the Spartans with 25 points (4/8 3-pt.), and Eduardo Chiquito had 11 points.
Evergreen Park 68 Leo 59 (OT): Nolan Sexton and Company Take Care of Home Court in Tight Battle with Lions
What do you do one year after you win in overtime in your own shootout? Well if you're the Mustangs, you do it again. Nathan Haugabook (12 points) started the overtime with a three for the Mustangs, and then Ulises Cardenas (13 points, 3/8 3-pt.) got a steal and a layup as the Mustangs finished off the Lions, outscoring them 14-5 in the overtime period. Junior Nolan Sexton led the Mustangs with 25 points (4/7 3-pt., 8/12 FT), and Lonnie Mosley had 11 points, including two free throws to ice the game. 6-6 Keeland Jordan led the Lions with 21 points, and 6-4 Jachi Lewis had 18 points.
Lemont 73 Brother Rice 57: Matas Castillo Dominates with 28 Points; Crusaders Unable to Recover from Bad Start
It was all Lemont from start to finish. The Castillo brothers, who are both committed to division II UW-Parkside, have been practically unstoppable all year, and this contest was no exception. Matas led all scorers with 28, and brother Rokas, along with Ryan Ruunas had 11 points. 6-6 Deividas had 13 points. Ahmad Henderson, Zavier Fitch, Khalil Ross, and Nick Niego each had 10 points for the Crusaders.
Mount Carmel 68 Kankakee 57: Caravan End Three Game Losing Skid; DeAndre Craig and the Ciaravino Brothers Continue to Do Their Thing
The Caravan hit a bit of a wall over the last three games, but got back on track in the nightcap against a very good Kankakee team. Senior sharp shooter Anthony Ciaravino led all scorers with 22 points for the Caravan (6 threes). Denver commit DeAndre Craig had 16 points, and 6-6 junior Angelo Ciaravino had 14 points for the Caravan. Larenz Walters led the Kays with 12 points. Jahiem Porter had 11 points off the bench, and Naz Hill had 8 points for the Kays.
