Sequoits Sweep District 117 Season Series; Another Double-Double for Jason Lee

matt now

At the start of this rivalry, the Eagles were the more dominant team. They've racked off consecutive season sweeps from the late 2000s through the late 2010s.

In recent years, the Sequoits have rebuilt their program with Coach Sean Connor as well as Tim Bowen and Jim White before him.

It was the Sequoits' turn to sweep the series Tuesday night taking down the Eagles (7-18, 4-8 NLCC) 55-45 in Lake Villa. Back in January, the Sequoits won 51-40 on their home floor.

The Sequoits (13-13, 9-3 NLCC) took a 22-9 lead midway through the second quarter after a one handed slam by Teddi Wetu off a Jack Majerowski steal and assist. The Eagles got a boost from Carson Norris and finished the half on an 8-2 run.

It remained tight through the third quarter, and into the early part of the fourth. The Sequoits led 37-33 at the end of three, and 41-36 with 5:10 left in regulation. Down the stretch the Sequoits fed the ball to Jason Lee, and pulled away late in regulation to close it out.

Lee has had a monster senior season putting up double-doubles night after night. Tuesday night was no exception for the 6-5 senior forward as he led the Sequoits with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Senior guard Teddi Wetu, who was the player of the game in the previous meeting, had 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Junior guard Mark Render scored 9 points, including a big three pointer late in the first half that built the Sequoits' early lead.

The Eagles were led by senior Manasseh Safeh who put up 11 points, hitting 3/5 from three with one of those three pointers keeping the contest close in regulation. Junior Carson Norris had 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Junior guard Aidan Hopkins, and sophomores Ben Newcomb and Carter Martin each had 6 points for the Eagles.

Each team has two conference games left. The Sequoits are at home Friday against Grayslake North (16-12, 8-4 NLCC) and at Round Lake (1-22, 0-12 NLCC) next Tuesday. They will play North Lawndale (11-11) Monday, and Chicago Sullivan (8-7) next Thursday to round up the non-conference schedule.

The Eagles finish the conference schedule at Grant (14-11, 7-5 NLCC) Friday night, and at Grayslake North next Tuesday before finishing the season at Johnsburg (15-13).
