The basketball season officially began for me Wednesday afternoon in Milwaukee. The Stormers began their quest to defend their national title against regional foe Elgin.
Leading the way were two returning starters: guard K.J. Taylor and 6-5 4-man Shelton Williams-Dryden. The Stormers picked up where they left off from last season, starting the game on a 10-0 run within the first two minutes.
The Spartans would get it together and make the first half competitive. They eventually took a brief 1 point lead on a three by Maine East grad Derryl Gaddi. However the Stormers would end the first half on a 25-6 run and lead 61-43 at halftime.
The Stormers controlled the game the rest of the way en route to a 122-95 victory. K.J. Taylor led the Stormers in scoring with 20 points, and had 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Shelton Williams-Dryden had 19 points, 9 boards, and 5 assists.
6-7 Jayquan Hickles had 17 points, 8 rebounds, and went 7/8 from the field. Shamann Artis had 14 points and 3 assists.
Proviso East grad Gabe Wright led all scorers with 24 points and had 6 rebounds for the Spartans. Bartlett grad Ian Smith had 14 points off bench, and 6-8 Meek Ater picked up 14 points of his own and had 11 boards.
Derryl Gaddi and Waubonsie Valley grad Isaiah Smith each had 13 points. South Elgin grad Elias Cole-Williams had 8 points and 5 steals.
