Vikings Stun Bulldogs in Batavia; Snap Thirteen Game Losing Streak in The Great American Rivalry
The Geneva community has been waiting for a Vikings victory over rival Batavia since 2011. Since then, the Bulldogs had one thirteen consecutive meetings.
The Vikings snapped their losing streak in dominant fashion with a 30-7 victory. The biggest takeaways were the Vikings' ability to keep Batavia running back Nathan Whitwell in check, and unleash a powerful downhill rushing attack courtesy of Michael Rumoro. Rumoro carried 23 times for 175 yards.
Whitwell, who had averaged over 180 rushing yards per game in the first five weeks, was held to just 34 yards on 16 carries. The only score for Batavia came as time expired in the first half when Isaiah Brown took the handoff on a reverse, and threw the ball back to quarterback Bodi Anderson in the corner of the endzone.
Geneva scored 23 unanswered points in the second half, which included 3 of Tony Chahino's 4 touchdown passes. All 3 touchdown passes in the second half went to receiver Finnegan Weppner. Chahino (16/29, 183 yards, 4 TD) threw his first touchdown at the 2:30 of the first quarter to Georgia commit Talyn Taylor.
Taylor had 8 total receptions for 55 yards. The aforementioned Weppner had 4 receptions for 42 yards.
A name to keep an eye on going forward in Geneva's passing attack is sophomore receiver Bennett Konkey. Konkey caught 4 passes for 86 yards, and showed he can be a deep threat at any time.
Bodi Anderson went 14/25 for 119 yards for the Bulldogs. Isaiah Brown caught 6 passes for 44 yards, and went 2/2 for 15 yards. Brett Berggren hjad 5 catches for 43 yards, and a 3 yard rush. Jake Mysliwiec had 3 catches for 40 yards.
Week 7, the Bulldogs (5-1, 3-1) will travel to St. Charles East (2-4, 2-2), and the Vikings (6-0, 4-0) will host Wheaton North (3-3, 1-3). Both games will be played Friday night at 7.
