Week 2 Recap: Hawks, Wolves Pull Away Late; South Suburban Rivalry Renewed; Five Stars of the Week
It was tough to top a hell of a week 1, but the Week 2 schedule was loaded with classic rivalries.
A handful of rivalry games included Providence Catholic-Joliet Catholic, Brother Rice-Marist, Notre Dame-St. Patrick, Downers Grove North-Downers Grove South, Mater Dei-Breese Central, and Deerfield-Highland Park. Other high-profile matchups included Lincoln-Way East-Batavia, Maine South-Warren, and Mount Carmel-Morgan Park.
I made trips to Warren, Prairie Ridge, and Homewood-Flossmoor.
Here's a Week 2 recap:
Maine South 28 Warren 7: Juniors Coines, Dellumo Spark Hawks Offense and Avenge Last Season's Loss to Blue Devils
The Hawks and Blue Devils have met now in each of the last three seasons, with the road team winning every meeting. The Hawks got a boost from running back Michael Dellumo (5 catches, 112 yards, TD, 9 carries, 18 yards, TD) and quarterback Constantine Coines (13/22, 242 yards, TD, INT, 8 carries, 107 yards, 2 TD). The Hawks got off to a 14-0 lead early on a 70 yard catch and run by Dellumo, and a 25 yard keeper by Coines. Donovan McNeal scored the only touchdown for Warren from 5 yards out. Sophomore Aaron Stewart, whom Coach McNulty is really high on, stood out for Warren, carrying the ball 19 times for 110 yards.
Prairie Ridge 38 Crystal Lake South 14: Logan Thennes Fumble Return Part of Wolves' Unanswered 38-Point Outburst
The first of three 'Battle of Crystal Lake' romps in the Fox Valley. The Gators, led by senior quarterback Caden Casimino (27/43, 285 yards, 2 TD, 2 Int), jumped on the Wolves 14-0 in the first 4:20 in the game.
The Wolves didn't blink.
Late in the second quarter the Wolves tied the game with two rushing touchdowns (Joey Vanderweil and Dom Creatore respectively) in the span of 1:36. Then a 41 yard hook 'n' ladder set up a go-ahead 23 yard field goal to end the first half. The big play of the game came late in the third when Logan Thennes recovered a bad snap on a Gators punt attempt and returned it for a touchdown. Wolves junior fullback Jack Finn closed out the game with two fourth quarter touchdown runs and finished with 169 rushing yards on 25 carries.
Homewood-Flossmoor 54 Marian Catholic 47: Seniors Brandon Brigham, Sochim Ozoh Lead Last Minute Comeback for Vikings
A rivalry renewed... with a bang.
It had been 11 years since the Spartans and Vikings played each other (the Vikings won the last meeting 35-7). Kansas commit Austin Alexander returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown (90 yards). Then Randall MacDonald (14/22, 262 yards, 4 TD, 2 Int, 6 carries, 42 yards, TD) threw a 57 yard touchdown pass to sophomore Myles Ellis on the first play of the Vikings opening offensive possession.
Big plays and clutch plays were the theme in this back-and-forth affair. Marian Catholic led 47-38 late in the fourth quarter. MacDonald threw a 10 yard pass to Myles Ellis and the Vikings converted a 2-point try with 1:38 left to cut the deficit to 1. After the Vikings recovered their own onside kick, senior running back Brandon Brigham put the team on his back and capped off the amazing comeback with a 7 yard run. The Vikings defense, led by outside linebacker Sochim Ozoh, made one more stand against the Spartans offense. Ozoh (4 TFL, 2 sacks, interception return TD) had his second of two sacks in that stand.
