Week in Review: Walkoffs, Nailbiters, Slugfests, and... Football Scores?

matt now

A little change of pace this time. I had a bit of a busy week this week between baseball coverage and work. Instead of a writeup for each individual game I decided to do a recap of the past week.

4/11: Glenbrook North 3 Deerfield 2

The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single by Spencer Geake (2/4). Deerfield pushed a run across in the 3rd and 5th innings; RBI single by Alex Fern (1/4) in the 3rd, and an RBI groundout by Jeremy Yanow in the 5th. Blake Telpner (2/3) lead off the 7th inning for the Spartans with a triple, and scored the tying run on a fielder's choice. Kevin Geake scored the winning run on a walkoff wild pitch. Deerfield sophomore righthander Mac Jones went 6.2 innings, gave up 5 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Glenbrook North senior Colin Roche went 6.2 innings, gave up 6 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and 12 strikeouts.

4/12: Schaumburg 8 Conant 7

After the Cougars handed Schaumburg their first loss of the year 9-6, the Saxons came back with a nailbiting 8-7 win. The Cougars scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning, taking advantage of some mistakes by the Saxon defense. The Saxons scored the next 8 runs; 2 in the 2nd thanks to a 2-run home run by Colin Quinn (2/3, 2B, HR, 3 RBI), 3 in the 3rd, and 3 in the 6th. Nate Barnitz's (1/3) 2-run double in the 3rd inning put the Saxons ahead for good. The Saxons lead 8-4 in the top of the 7th, but the Cougars would score 3 runs off reliever Alex Spung (1/3, RBI, 1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, ER, BB 2 K) before Spung was replaced by Zach Miller with 2 out. Miller struckout Bryce Loeger looking for the final out. Cougars lefthander Logan Gale gave up 5 runs in 5 innings and struckout 11. Brayden Mezzacano gave up 4 runs (all in the 2nd inning) in 5 innings for the Saxons and struckout 7. Catcher Jake Parpet went 4/4 with 2 doubles, and 2 RBI for the Cougars.

4/14: Grayslake Central 15 Grant 3 (5 Innings)

The Rams complete the season sweep of the Bulldogs, winning the first two games 7-2 and 9-3. In the 15-3 finale win, the Rams scored 5 in the 1st and 7 in the 3rd. Firstbaseman Chris Rogers went 3/4 with 3 RBI, and finished a homerun shy of the cycle.

4/15: Providence 28 Lockport 17

"Honey, I went to the baseball game, and the football game broke out!"

In all seriousness, this was a wild one! The Porters scored 5 each in the 1st and 6th, 1 each in the 2nd, 4th, and 7th, and 4 in the 5th. The Celtics scored 5 in the 2nd, 10 in the 3rd, 1 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th, and 9 in the 7th. Each team also had a grand slam: Lockport's Caden Miller and Providence's Jackson Smith. Both Miller and Smith finished with 5 RBI. Celtics centerfielder A.J. Vinci went 1/2 with a 2-run triple and a trio of RBI via base on balls. Porters centerfielder went 3/4 with 2 RBI doubles. The Porters' pitching staff gave up a total of 15 walks.
