Arguably the biggest transfer news across the state this past offseason was of class of 2026 quarterback Jonas Williams. Back in January, Williams announced, via Twitter, he had transferred from Bolingbrook to Lincoln-Way East.
The junior quarterback, who recently committed to Oregon, did not disappoint in his Griffins debut throwing for 355 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 pick in a 49-22 Griffins win over fellow 8A power Maine South. Those 4 touchdown passes included a 12 yard pass to MJ Schley to finish a 61 yard drive to start the game, a 29 yard pass to Keegan Ruane, and 2 passes of 67 and 70 yards to Talen White in the 3rd quarter.
The Griffins also picked up a big boost from junior running back Brody Gish. Gish took over for Zion Gist after Gist left the game with an injury, and ran for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Gish had touchdown runs of 1, 65, and 33 yards.
The Hawks had a chance to get themselves back in the game early in the second half. First play of the second half, the Hawks' defense recovered a Brody Gish fumble, and receiver Mason Patras scored on a 26 yard catch-and-run from senior quarterback Constantine Coines on the next play to get the Hawks within 5. The Griffins would score three consecutive touchdowns, and led 42-16 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Coines threw for 194 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. Sophomore Jameson Purcell took over in the 4th quarter, and went 5/7 for 40 yards.
Mason Patras caught 6 passes for 100 yards, and a touchdown for Maine South. Fellow receiver Jacob Vitel caught 7 passes for 72 yards, including a 15 yard touchdown in the 2nd quarter.
Week 2 sees Maine South (0-1) hosting Warren (1-0) Friday night for their home opener. Lincoln-Way East (1-0) will have the week off after their scheduled opponent cancelled.
